Vulnerable Adults
This work stream will support the regional ADASS Safeguarding network under the direction of the ADASS NW lead director for safeguarding. The programme will engage with local authorities and disseminate good practice and suport improvement in the quality of safeguarding arrangements for vulnerable adults in the region.
Mental Capacity Act
The Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) introduced important principles for working with people and both empowers and protects people who may lack capacity.
The Department of Health funds regional support in rolling out the MCA programme. The NW supports 23 local authorities (LAs) and 24 primary care trusts (PCTs) in meeting their local statutory repsonsibilties.
Deprivation of Liberty safeguards ( DoLs)
The Deprivation of Liberty safeguards (DoLs) were introduced in 2009 as an amendment to the Mental Capacity Act ( 2005). The safeguards focus on vulnerable adults who neeed to be accommodated for care and or treatment at hospital and or in care homes, for which they lack the capacity to consent, in circumstances that amount to a deprivation of their liberty.
The NWJIP leads on regional implementation of this new status. Our worksteam proves support networks, information to and from the Department of Health advice on interpretation of the statute and runs events.
